First recognized in 1997 and established as its own disease in 2000, Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) is a rare disease in people who have kidney dysfunction or renal failure. NSF causes excessive fibrous tissue to develop in the skin, and connective tissue. Symptoms associated with NSF include:
- Constant pain
- Thickening, tightening and hardening of the skin
- Skin burning or itching
- Restricted joint mobility
- Swelling in extremities
- Inability to extend limbs or walk
- Muscle restlessness and weakness
- Deep bone pain
NSF can also occur in internal organs and in severe cases may result in death.
What causes NSF?
Gadolinium is a rare metal used in MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) scans to show contrasts between different tissue types. Because patients with renal failure or kidney dysfunction cannot flush gadolinium out of the body, it remains in tissues, producing fibrosis, or excessive fibrous tissue. According to research, 95% of NSF patients received a gadolinium MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or MRA scan (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) prior to being diagnosed with NSF. Kidney patients generally developed NSF symptoms between two days and 18 days after an MRI or MRA.
Although Gadolinium has been used in scans for the past 20 years, NSF has only recently been recognized as a related disease. For that reason, many people prior to 2000 may not have been correctly diagnosed with NSF.
