What the AP Says
The Associated Press’s report claims that the FDA has looked at 35 reports of seizures that occurred to e-cigarette users. These were mostly young users. They found that there are concerning patterns that should be looked at further. The case they considered involved cases up to nine years old that were reported to either the EPA or poison control centers. The AP also reports that officials have noted an increase in seizures starting in 2018.
They note that the total percentage of people who have used vape pens or e-cigarettes and then suffered seizures is low, this can largely be due to the fact that reporting is voluntary. This has been the same safety issue they have dealt with regarding reporting issues with foods, supplements, and many other consumer products.
The Link Between Smoking, Vaping, and Seizures
E-cigarettes deliver flavored nicotine via a vapor that can be inhaled. These devices are a multi-billion dollar industry but have almost no regulation over them. In fact, many refillable e-cigarettes can be filled with any solution and any strength of nicotine.
Many people do not realize what a serious issue nicotine poisoning is. It can lead to a number of serious health outcomes, including brain injuries, seizures, and convulsions. The FDA shows that fatal nicotine can occur when a child accidentally swallows nicotine solutions. Studies have shown that nicotine leads to hyperactivity within a user’s brain. The FDA wants consumers to report any issues involving e-cigarettes and seizures either online or via the phone so that they can better study the potential issue.
There Are Serious Issues with the E-Cigarette Industry
The E-cigarette industry has come out against the FDA investigation saying that there are only a few complaints and many safe and satisfied users. However, the issues with the e-cigarette industry do not begin and end with these types of long-term health effects – in some cases, e-cigarettes have exploded while users are using them.
